You may be able to complain to the installer, or claim against your card or finance provider under Section 75 and, if that is rejected, ask the Financial Ombudsman to look at it. Get independent evidence before any removal: claims have been hard to prove once the foam was gone[1]. This is general information, not legal advice.

Key facts
- Section 75 can make a credit card or finance provider equally liable with the supplier for misrepresentation or breach of contract, within price limits set in the Act[2]
- The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires a service to be carried out with reasonable care and skill[3]
- Contract claims generally have a six-year limit, which the ombudsman has applied strictly in spray foam cases (2016 and 2019 installations)[4][5]
- In a 2025 decision the ombudsman said a lender could doubt a report from the firm that removed the foam and charged for it[6]
- TrustMark cannot help if the business has ceased trading or lost its registration[7]
Step by step
Gather your paperwork and payment records
Collect the quote, contract, invoices, product approval, warranty, photographs and your card statement or finance agreement. What paperwork spray foam should come with
Write down what you were told
Note, with dates, what the salesperson said about the foam, mortgages, grants or damp. In one 2025 decision, notes a homeowner made at the sales visit were accepted as an accurate record; in another, a claim failed with no evidence of what was said[8][1]. What the ombudsman looks for
Check the dates
Contract claims generally have a six-year limit, and in a 2026 decision later discovery of the risk did not move the start date[5][4]. If the work is nearly six years old, act promptly. Your consumer rights and time limits
Get independent evidence before any removal
In one upheld decision, an independent inspection by a RICS member found the foam installed incorrectly[9]. In others, removal left no independent assessment, and a removal firm's own report was doubted for independence[10][1][6]. Evidence for a spray foam claim
Complain to the installer, or to the warranty provider
If the installer is still trading, complain to them first; if it has gone, contact the warranty provider named in your paperwork[11][12]. Ministers point scheme customers to their warranty if the installer has gone, but TrustMark cannot help once a business has ceased trading[13][7]. Installer gone: warranties and TrustMark
Claim against your card or finance provider
If you paid by credit card or with a finance agreement, Section 75 may make the provider equally liable with the installer, within the Act's price limits[2]. Put your full case and evidence to the provider now: arguments not first raised with the lender carried little weight later[6][14]. How a Section 75 claim works
Take it to the Financial Ombudsman if you are not satisfied
If the provider rejects your claim, you can ask the ombudsman to look at it; each decision turns on its evidence. For 2018–2021 sales, decisions found no evidence installers could have known lenders would object[14][15]. Spray foam and the Financial Ombudsman
What to do next
- Don't agree to removal until there is an independent record of the foam and the timbers, as in Section 75 claim open: the higher readings sat only at the gable where foam was missed.
- If a claims firm contacts you, check its fee first: FCA rules cap claims-management fees on financial services claims (PS21/18, Nov 2021)[16].
- If you want independent evidence for a complaint or claim, see the service below.
Record the evidence before any removal
Claims have been hard to prove once the foam was gone. An evidence inspection documents the foam, its condition and any installation defects, with photos, for you to use with the installer, your card or finance provider, or the ombudsman.
Report within 48–72 hours of inspection. Independent: no installation, no removal, no referral commissions.

Open-cell foam from 2022, since removed, with a Section 75 claim open. Cured foam on the tiles behind the felt showed the felt was holed there when sprayed. Timber read 11.6% to 16.4%; the foam had stopped short of the eaves.

Questions people ask
Can I get compensation for spray foam?
Possibly, depending on the evidence; no one can predict the outcome. In one final decision the ombudsman upheld a complaint and told the lender to make a refund, pay for removing the foam and pay a small sum for inconvenience, as the waterlogged foam showed a lack of reasonable care and skill[17]. Others have failed for lack of independent evidence[15].
