    Short answer

Installers must do spray foam work with reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015[1]. If you agreed the contract at home, you usually have 14 days to cancel[2], and work must not start within them unless you expressly asked, in a record you can keep[3]. This is general information, not legal advice.

    • If cancellation information was not given, the cancellation period can extend by up to 12 months.[4]
    • Work must not start within the cancellation period without your express request on a durable medium (reg 36).[3]

    Your next step

    Put evidence behind your complaint

A complaint is stronger with a record of what was actually installed. An evidence inspection documents the foam, its condition and any installation defects, for you to use with the installer, your card or finance provider, or the ombudsman.

    Questions people ask

Can I cancel spray foam insulation after it has been installed?

Possibly, if you are still within the cancellation period. For a contract made at home the period is 14 days, and it can extend by up to 12 months if you were not given cancellation information[2][4]. If you asked for work to start early, regulation 36 says you pay a proportionate amount; if no express request was made, or no cancellation information was given, it says you pay nothing for that period[3].

The salesman said the price was only for today. Is that allowed?

Aggressive practices and misleading actions are banned under the DMCCA 2024, in force since 6 April 2025[13]. Citizens Advice lists high-pressure sales without explaining risks among the tactics reported to it[15]. You can report it through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline, whose advisers can pass it to Trading Standards[8]. For checking a caller, see spray foam cold calls and scams.

Is it too late to complain about spray foam installed years ago?

Time matters. Contract claims have a six-year limit under the Limitation Act 1980, and the ombudsman applied it strictly in two spray foam Section 75 decisions, including one where the foam was installed in February 2016 and the claim made in 2023[6][7]. Check the date of your contract now and get advice from the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133[8].

Who do I report a spray foam company to?

Call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133; advisers can pass your complaint to Trading Standards, which you cannot do yourself[8]. In Scotland, contact Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 164 6000[25]. If the work was done under a government scheme and the installer is still registered, TrustMark's complaints process may also apply[23][28].
