    Short answer

A product approval independently assesses one spray foam product for set uses, with conditions the installation must meet; it does not prove your installation complied. UKAS suspended its recognition of the BBA from 26 February 2026 until 25 November 2026 at the latest (withdrawal is possible), and says existing approvals remain valid until expiry. Correct at 20 October 2026[1][2].

    Key facts

    • UKAS suspended all scopes of its recognition of the BBA from 26 February 2026 (UKAS statement, 15 June 2026)[2]
    • The suspension runs until the BBA closes UKAS's findings, and at the latest to 25 November 2026; withdrawal is possible otherwise[2]
    • Existing UKAS-backed BBA approvals remain valid until expiry; no new ones can be issued under UKAS cover[2]
    • At 20 October 2026 no later UKAS statement was found, and the BBA's website still said "currently suspended"[2][3]
    • The BBA lists "automatically complies with Building Regulations" as a misconception about approved products (June 2021)[1]
    • Approval bodies such as the BBA approve products, not installers[1]
    • The Kiwa spray foam approvals traced for this guide each state a three-year validity[4][5]

What is a spray foam product approval?

A product approval is a document from an independent body that assesses one product for particular uses, such as rafter-level insulation over a breathable…

Is a "BBA certificate" the same as a product approval?

Yes: people often call a BBA product approval a "BBA certificate", and the BBA itself used the word in the title of a 2021 webinar.

What does a product approval not tell you?

It does not tell you that your installation was done correctly, or that your roof was suitable for foam.

How do you check a spray foam product approval?

Find the number, then check that the document matches your product, your roof and today's date.

    What is the BBA suspension?

UKAS (the United Kingdom Accreditation Service) suspended all scopes of its recognition of the BBA on 26 February 2026, until the BBA closes UKAS's findings…

Are existing BBA approvals still valid?

Yes, according to UKAS: existing UKAS-backed BBA product approvals "remain valid until their expiry date", but no new ones can be issued under UKAS cover…

What about Kiwa, BRE and NSAI approvals?

Kiwa is the other UK approval body named by the PCA protocol, the industry Code and Trading Standards guidance.

What does the suspension mean if you have spray foam?

For most homeowners the practical questions are the same as before: which product was used, does its approval cover your roof, and was it installed to that…

    What to do next

    • Find the approval number in your paperwork or loft record, and get the full document for your product.
    • Check its date, whether it has been superseded, and whether its product sheet covers your roof's underlay.
    • Remember that a valid approval describes the product, not your installation; compare the conditions with your loft.
    • Re-check the BBA's position after 25 November 2026, or see this guide's changes log.
    • If you want independent evidence of what is in your loft, see the inspection below.
    Your next step

Check your installation, not just the approval

A valid approval describes the product, not how it was fitted in your roof. An independent inspection records what the foam is sprayed onto and the loft's condition, so you can compare them with the approval's conditions.

    Questions people ask

What is a "BBA certificate" for spray foam?

It is the everyday name for a BBA product approval: a document assessing one spray foam product for particular uses and setting the conditions it must be installed to[1][6]. It is about the product, not your house. The BBA says an approval is not a warranty and does not cover poor installation[1].

Is my spray foam BBA approval still valid after the suspension?

UKAS says existing UKAS-backed BBA approvals remain valid until their expiry date, though no new ones can be issued under UKAS cover during the suspension (statement, 15 June 2026)[2]. Check the approval's own date and whether it has been superseded, as BBA 20/5846 was by BBA 23/7062[14].

When will the BBA suspension end?

UKAS says the suspension lasts until the BBA closes its findings, and at the latest until 25 November 2026, with withdrawal possible otherwise[2]. At 20 October 2026 no later UKAS statement had been found, and the BBA's website still described its status as suspended[2][3].

Does a BBA approval mean my spray foam was installed correctly?

No. The BBA says an approval covers only the installation it describes and does not cover site suitability or poor installation[1]. Whether your foam matches the conditions, such as the underlay type and vapour control layer, can only be judged by comparing the approval with the loft itself[7].

How long does a Kiwa spray foam approval last?

The Kiwa approvals traced for this guide state a three-year validity: BAR-19-132 (first issued December 2021, revised November 2024) and BAR-20-170 (October 2021), whose renewal could not be confirmed[4][5]. Ask for the current issue of the document for your product.
